Karan Johar's life saw a major setback in 2003 during the shoot of the iconic film Kal Ho Na Ho. It was at that moment he learnt of his father and iconic producer, Yash Johar’s diagnosis of oesophageal cancer.
As he was busy with the post-production schedule of his film in New York, back at home on August 2003, he was shocked when his father told him about his cancer diagnosis. He also recalled his exact feelings from the moment in his autobiography The Unsuitable Boy and wrote: “I looked at him and – I have no idea why these words came out of my mouth, I have no explanation – but I looked at him and said, ‘Do you have cancer?” And as his father said yes, Karan “just sank, literally sank into a chair in the room.”
The news deeply affected KJo and the movie’s lead actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Despite the major setback, the team continued filming. “I told Shah Rukh. He broke down. Then I realised the reality of what was happening, because he wept like a baby. He held his stomach, and he just wept and wept, as if from his core. He cried and said ‘I’ve lost one father, I cant lose another’,” KJo recalled.
The producer’s cancer treatment coincided with 'Kal Ho Na Ho's story about a man seeking treatment in New York. ALSO READ | Anu Aggarwal Recalls Karan Johar’s Father Yash Johar Came To Meet Her After Her Accident; Says, ‘I Was Told Later, But I Couldn’t Recognise People’
